How a San Diego kid gets recruited.

You do not need a national recruiting service. You need film, a transcript, and a list of schools that actually take San Diego kids. That is it.

Hudl first, everything else second.

A coach at a mid-major program reviews hundreds of prospects per month. He does not have time to track down film. If there is no Hudl link when he searches your name, you do not exist. Upload full games, not just highlights. Highlights are a trailer. Coaches want to watch how you play when the play does not go your way.

Get your NCAA ID before a coach asks.

Go to eligibilitycenter.org and register. A coach cannot officially contact you, extend an offer that matters, or see your academic profile if you are not registered. Do this sophomore year at the latest.

Core courses are not optional.

The NCAA requires 10 core courses by the end of junior year and 16 total before graduation. In San Diego County, CIF SDS transcripts are what coaches request when they are serious. Talk to your counselor before junior year. If you are behind on core courses, that is the problem to solve, not your 40 time.

Email the position coach yourself.

Nobody is coming to find you. Send a short email to the position coach at every school you are interested in. Two sentences: who you are, your position, class year, and a Hudl link. That is the entire email. Do it in the summer before junior year. Coaches can respond to athlete-initiated contact when the calendar allows.

Camps are optional.

Camps matter if you are attending one at a school you actually want to attend, because the coaching staff sees you in person. They do not matter as a "exposure camp" with 400 kids in a parking lot. Save the money for an official visit.
